In Boston B League, we provide most of the equipment for each of our leagues. However, we do ask individuals to provide some of their own equipment depending on the sport. For example, we ask that each player brings their own softball glove to the game. A frequent question we receive is, "What equipment would you recommend we get?"
Given all of us who organize and manage Boston B League are actively playing in the league, we've tested or used quite a bit of sports equipment and have worked to compile a list of recommendations based on personal experience or player feedback. That said, we'll be the first to admit that this list isn't exhaustive and everyone's preferences can be different.
When possible, we strongly recommend rummaging through your parent's house to find your old equipment if it's still suitable. If not, we recommend looking into second-hand sports equipment where possible to keep personal and environmental costs down. Apart from obvious vendors such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Craigslist (for the brave), some players have had luck with sports-specific vendors like Play It Again Sports near Boston.
That said, if you can't find a second-hand item or would simply prefer a new item, we've included a number of items that we either currently use or have used in the past and would recommend to our players. Please note that we've added links to various vendors for everyone's convenience and may earn a commission.
To get started with kickball, you don't really need any equipment! To play, we recommend that each player wear suitable clothing knowing you'll be doing a lot of kicking and running outdoors, and you'll also want to wear a good pair of athletic shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. While you're welcome to wear non-metal metal cleats on natural turf fields, they're certainly not needed.
While we'll be providing the officials, bases, and regulation sized kickballs, we just ask our players to bring a great attitude and love for the game!
To get started with slow-pitch softball, you don't need a whole bunch of equipment. Unless otherwise specified, we require each player to bring their own glove to each game. For those who are acquiring their first glove, you'll want to get a left handed glove if you throw with your right hand. If you throw with your left hand, you'll want to get a right-handed glove. In slowpitch softball, we recommend gloves between 12-14" depending on your preference.
We also ask that each team bring their own USA/ASA approved bat to each game as well. That said, we do have a limited number of loaner bats that we can provide upon request. For safety reasons, non-USA/ASA approved bats are not permitted.
If you're looking to embrace the B League / Beer League look, think about visiting our league store and supplement your jersey with a new hat / shirt. Look the part and support your B League on and off the field!

$60.01 @ AmazonFor the casual, rec softball player - this Franklin glove/mitt works great. With many league members owning this glove, we recommend personalizing it with your name to keep it identifiable on the team bench.
$20.31 @ AmazonA reliable favorite with a satisfying sound, our team (Soft Serve) has been using this this bat since 2019. While we're still searching for our first championship, don't hold that against this bat. Given this bat can be pricey, we suggest finding a past model if available. ASA/USA Approved
